Desde una simple regla graduada, fija y sumergida en el agua, atendida por un observador que ve el nivel del agua en la graduaci\u00f3n\n                      de la regla y manualmente anota su observaci\u00f3n en un cuaderno de registro, hasta un dispositivo electroac\u00fastico encapsulado y conectado a una computadora, con comunicaci\u00f3n hacia alg\u00fan sat\u00e9lite y totalmente <!---->\n      <!---->\n      <div class=\"\">\n        <p>El prop\u00f3sito es medir, en un lugar dado, el nivel del mar con respecto a un nivel de referencia en tierra firme, una vez eliminado el efecto del oleaje local. Tradicionalmente, esto se logra midiendo el nivel del mar en un entorno que no est\u00e9\n          perturbado por las olas, como puede ser un muelle en el interior de un puerto. Pero las olas provocadas por el tr\u00e1fico de las embarcaciones tambi\u00e9n pueden contaminar las mediciones. Por tal raz\u00f3n es usual que se use un tubo vertical fijo, suficientemente\n          largo y bien sumergido en el agua para que las olas ni lo rebasen ni hagan vac\u00edo en \u00e9l (figura). Se tapa el extremo sumergido del tubo para impedir el libre flujo del agua, pero se perforan orificios laterales con el di\u00e1metro necesario para\n          que fluya (entre y salga) agua del tubo de manera tan lenta que filtre las oscilaciones del oleaje exterior, pero siempre en cantidad suficiente para que el agua en el interior del tubo represente realmente el nivel promedio del agua exterior.\n          Una vez logrado este prop\u00f3sito, existen varios dispositivos para medir la distancia vertical que recorre el nivel del agua dentro del tubo. Uno muy com\u00fan es un flotador conectado a una polea y a un mecanismo simple que registra de manera continua,\n          en un rollo de papel, el lento sube y baja del nivel de agua dentro del tubo. Este dispositivo debe estar conectado tambi\u00e9n a un reloj que marque, con la mayor precisi\u00f3n posible, el momento en que se registra cada medici\u00f3n. De esta manera se\n          obtienen los gr\u00e1ficos de la evoluci\u00f3n de la marea en cada lugar donde \u00e9sta se mide. El uso de la tecnolog\u00eda moderna ha permitido el dise\u00f1o y fabricaci\u00f3n de instrumentos m\u00e1s convenientes para medir la marea. <\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n
